MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team hosted the Colby College Mules this afternoon in a
non-conference game. After a scoreless first half, the Hawks'
offense gained momentum, as they skated past the Mules 3-1 to pick
up their first victory of 2010. The win lifts the Hawks to
8-3-1 (6-2-1 ECAC East), while the Mules fall to 2-6-4 (0-3-2
NESCAC).
After an uneventful 30 minutes of play, Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) finally opened the scoring at
11:11 in the second period, knocking in a pass from Ciara
Petry (Poolesville, Md.) by the net. Bridget
Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.) picked up the second assist on
the play.
At `1:59 in the third period, a Hawk tripping penalty gave the
Mules an extra skater, and just 11 seconds later, Tasha
Rivard (Newbury, Mass.) took advantage, netting a goal
from Liz Osgood (North Andover, Mass.) and
Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) to tie the
game at one. However, the score did not remain tied for long,
as Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) netted a quick slap
shot right after the opening faceoff just 27 seconds later to
regain the Hawks' lead. Two minutes after that, Sami
Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) recorded her first goal of the
season, to secure the Hawks a 3-1 victory.
The Hawks outshot the Mules 42-19 and both teams went 1-for-5 on
the power play. Hawk goaltender Carley Berry
(Danvers, Mass.) made 18 saves in the game to pick up her
second win of the season, and Loni Pisani (Kanata,
Ont.) dropped to 0-4-3 after stopping 39 shots in 59:23
minutes in the net.
The Hawks continue their six-game homestand next Friday night,
when they host the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals in a non-conference
game at Sullivan Arena. The Cardinals were the NCAA Division
III champions in 2007 and 2008, and the runner-up in 2006.
The game is scheduled to being at 7:00 pm.
