WINCHENDON, MASS. - The Saint Anselm
men's ice hockey team travelled to Winchendon, Mass., this evening
to take on the Franklin Pierce University Ravens in their second
Northeast-10 Conference game of the season. Freshman
Brendan Carroll (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his first
two career goals in the game, and Paul Snell (Groton,
Mass.) notched a goal and three assists.
Brendan Carroll struck quickly for the Hawks, netting a goal
from Chris Sullivan (Needham, Mass.) just two
minutes into the first period. Shortly after, at 3:48,
Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) gave the Hawks a
two-goal lead, fed by Paul Snell and Tucker Mullin
(Andover, Mass.). Before the end of the first, the Ravens
put themselves on the board, as Phil LaBreck (Thornton,
N.H.) and Justin Adams (Homer, Alaska)
set up Jonathan Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) on a
power play to cut the Hawks' lead in half.
At the beginning of the second period, Raven goaltender
Matt McCarthy (Natick, Mass.) came in to replace
starter Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.). The Hawks
then went on to score three quick goals before the four-minute
mark. At 1:30, captain Nick Wheeler (Nashua,
N.H.) knocked in his first goal of the season, assisted by
Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.) and Paul Snell.
Less than a minute later, Carroll scored his second goal of
the game, from John Penny (Andover, Mass.) and
John Hennessey (Westwood, Mass.). The goal-rush
continued at 3:46, when Paul Snell netted his second goal of the
season, assisted by freshmen Ryan Clark (Wadsworth,
Ohio) and Timothy King.
At 9:24 in the second, a Raven holding penalty gave the Hawks a
power play. Midway through the penalty kill, a second,
delayed penalty, allowed the Hawks an extra attacker, and five
seconds later, Noonan netted a 6-on-4 goal from Butler and Snell to
give the Hawks a 6-1 lead. At 2:08 in the third period,
Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) set up
Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.) during a power
play to get one back for the Ravens, but it was all the offense
they could muster, as the Hawks soared to a 6-2 victory.
Kevin Fairweather (Woburn, Mass.) made 21 saves
and allowed both goals to earn his second win of the season.
Starter Ben Siok made eight saves and allowed two goals in 20:00
minutes, and Matt McCarthy made 23 saves and allowed four goals in
40:00 minutes of relief, taking the loss.
The win lifts the Hawks to 4-4 (2-0, 4 pts, NE-10), while the
Ravens fall to 3-8-2 (1-3-1, 0 pts, NE-10). The Hawks are the
only team to remain undefeated in Northeast-10 Conference play, as
they claim sole custody of first place in the standings with four
points. The Hawks return home on Friday, January 8th, when
they host the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC East
Conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
