HARRISVILLE, R.I. -- The Saint
Anselm women's ice hockey team travelled to Rhode Island this
evening to take on the Nichols College Bison in an ECAC East
conference game. The Hawks' offense erupted early and often,
as the Hawks cruised to an 8-0 shutout victory. Freshman
Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.)
scored her first career hat trick, and goaltender Carley
Berry (Danvers, Mass.) earned her seventh career
shutout. The win lifts the Hawks to 10-6-1 (8-3-1 ECAC East),
while the Bison fall to 2-12-2 (2-9-2 ECAC East).
Sophomore Bridget Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.)
opened the scoring early, netting her first goal of the season just
3:53 into the first period. At 10:37 in the first, Sarah
Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) knocked in a power-play goal, to
give the Hawks a quick 2-0 lead.
At the start of the second period, Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) won the opening faceoff, and
passed it to Sylvester, who netted a shorthanded goal just 15
seconds after the puck drop. Five minutes later, Ellins
slapped in her second power-play goal of the game to make it 4-0,
Hawks. At 12:06 in the second, Rosemarie Giarrusso tapped in
her first goal of the game, and with one minute remaining in the
period, Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) scored a third
power-play goal for a 6-0 lead heading into the third.
At 3:30 in the final period, Giarrusso scored a 5-on-3
power-play goal and at 14:43, she netted her third goal of the
game, completing her first career hat trick, and securing the Hawks
an 8-0 victory.
Hawk goaltender Carley Berry made 17 saves in the game, to
complete her first shutout this season and the seventh of her
career. Nichols starting goaltender Melanie Spears
(Woburn, Mass.) made 28 saves in the first 25:05 minutes
of the game, allowing three goals and taking the loss, and
Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) also made 28
saves and gave up the remaining five goals in 34:55 minutes in
relief.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to
Worcester, Mass., to take on the Colllege of the Holy Cross
Crusaders in an ECAC East conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
