WORCESTER, MASS. – The Saint Anselm
women's ice hockey team traveled to Worcester, Mass., this
evening to take on the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders in ECAC
East play for the second time in eight days. Sophomore
Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) scored two early goals
for the Hawks, but the Crusaders went on to score four unanswered
goals to take the game 4-2. This is the first time the Crusaders
have ever beaten the Hawks in 13 match-ups. The Crusaders hang on
to first place with a 15-3-1 (12-1-1 ECAC East) record, while the
Hawks fall to 10-7-1 (8-4-1 ECAC East).
Molly Corl struck early, netting a pass from team captain
Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.) just 6:08 into
the first period. Just over four minutes later, Corl gave the Hawks
a 2-0 lead as she knocked in a 5-on-3 power-play goal from
Dougherty and Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.).
At 16:13 in the first, Lisa Wilson put the
Crusaders on the board, netting a 4-on-4 goal from Kathryn
O'Connor. One minute and nine seconds later,
Caroline English tied the game at two, heading
into the second period. At 9:47 in the second, English gave the
Crusaders their first lead of the game, assisted by Wilson.
With just over two minutes remaining the final period, the Hawks
sent in an extra attacker to create a 6-on-4 power-play situation,
but Wilson managed to wrestle the puck away from the Hawks to net a
shorthanded, empty-netter, and give the Crusaders their first
victory over the Hawks in history.
Sophomore Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
made 29 saves in the game, and Carly
Dominick-Sobol made just 12 to pick up her seventh win of
the season. The Hawks return home on Tuesday night, when they host
the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in their final non-conference game
of the season. The game will begin at 7:00 pm.
