West Haven, Conn. (January 23) -- Led by four
players in double figures, the New Haven women's basketball team
defeated Saint Anselm by a 63-46 final on Saturday afternoon in
Northeast-10 Conference action at Charger Gym.
Saint Anselm led early on in the opening half before a 14-2
Charger run made it a 20-12 New Haven lead with 8:55 left in the
period. The Hawks pulled to within two at 20-18 following a layup
from Grace Harrington (Salem, Mass.), but a 6-0
UNH run to end the half made it 26-18 at the break.
In the second half, the Chargers never led by less than five and
pushed the lead into double digits midway through the period. Saint
Anselm cut the lead down to seven late, but the Chargers ended the
game on a 10-0 run for the 17-point victory.
Sophomore guard Epiphany Smith (Springdale,
Ark.) was the lone Hawk in double figures with 19 points,
while Dominique Stellmacher paced four Chargers in
double figures with 15 points. Defensively, the Chargers forced 29
Saint Anselm turnovers.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 7-11 overall and 4-9 in the
Northeast-10, while the Chargers improve to 8-10 overall and 6-7 in
league play. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday evening,
hosting Assumption for a 5:30 p.m. start at Stoutenburgh Gym.
