MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's
soccer team returned home this afternoon to host the College of
Saint Rose Golden Knights in Northeast-10 Conference play. On
a brisk fall day at Melucci Field, the Hawks defeated the Golden
Knights by a score of 1-0 to notch the team's second consecutive
win. Junior Dave Hugel (Simsbury, Conn.)
scored the game-winning goal for the Hawks.
The game started slowly, each team taking four shots in the
first half hour, but it was a Golden Knight foul that made all the
difference. At 31:41, sophomore Justin Colella
(Wilmington, Mass.) took a free kick from outside the box,
which was blocked by the wall of Golden Knight defenders.
Colella quickly got the rebound and sent it towards the net, where
Dave Hugel knocked it in, scoring the first goal of his career.
The Hawks' first goal was the only one they would need, as the
Hawks' defense and freshman goalkeeper Eric Moriarty
(Center Harbor, N.H.) kept the Golden Knights off the
board for the entire game. Moriarty, making his second career
start in goal, would get his first true test around the 10 minute
mark in the second period. The Golden Knights got the ball
downfield and took five shots from close in within one minute, but
the Hawks succeeded in holding onto their lead. In that one
minute, Moriarty had three saves, and Keesen Howe (Norwich,
Conn.) and Justin Colella each had a defensive save,
guarding the net after Moriarty made a diving stop.
Moriarty and Saint Rose keeper Patrik Ohlsson
(Sodertalje, Sweden) each had seven saves in the
game. With today's win, the Hawks improve to 2-6-1 (2-3,
NE-10) and the Golden Knights fall to 2-7 (1-4, NE-10). The
Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 30th, as
they host Franklin Pierce for a Northeast-10 Conference game
beginning at 3:30 pm.
