MANCHESTER, N.H.
- The Saint Anselm men's soccer team opened their
season tonight with a Northeast-10 Conference match at Southern
Connecticut State University. The game resulted in a 3-1 loss
to the Owls, who improved to 2-1 (1-0 NE-10), while the Hawks are
now 0-1 (0-1 NE-10). Freshman H. Clark Preston
(Wilton, N.H.) recorded his first career goal late in the
second period.
The Hawks' offense struck first, as freshman Maximilian
Glebocki (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the ball and took a shot
just 0:47 into the game, but it was saved by goalkeeper
Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Conn.). Glebocki got
open for another shot on goal just over three minutes later, but
was robbed once again. After a series of fouls called on
Saint Anselm, the Owls gained possession of the ball and kept it in
their control for the majority of the period.
The first goal of the game came at end of the first period, when
junior Victor Hernandez (Rye Brook, N.Y.) sent the
ball sailing past the Hawks' defense into the top corner of the
goal from outside the box. The goal was his second of the
season. Just five minutes into the second period, the Owls
struck again, as sophomore Jeremy Tavares (Waterbury,
Conn.) scored his first goal of the season, set up by
Hernandez and sophomore Seth Ragaini (Seymour,
Conn.).
Deeper into the second period, the Hawks got a few chances, as
Justin Colella (Wilmington, Mass.) and
Joshua Rocco (N. Reading, Mass.) each took
shots. However, after a Saint Anselm corner kick, Southern
Connecticut regained control of the ball, and in the
71st minute, sophomore captain Paul Templeton
(Saltcoats, Scotland) scored the Owls' third goal of the
evening, his first this season. Ragaini picked up another
assist on the play.
However, with less than seven minutes to go in the game,
freshman H. Clark Preston put the Hawks on the board, scoring Saint
Anselm's first goal of the season off a corner kick taken by
Colella.
While the Owls outshot the Hawks 12-8, the Hawks were much more
accurate, accumulating a .675 shots on goal percentage over the
Owls' .333. The Hawks' goalkeeper John Corridan
(Holliston, Mass.) had one save in the game and Esposito
had four.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on
Wilmington, (Del.) across town at the Southern New Hampshire
University Invitational. The non-conference match is
scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
