MANCHESTER, N.H.
- The Saint Anselm women's soccer team picked up
its third consecutive conference win this afternoon in
Pleasantville, N.Y. as they defeated the Pace University Setters,
2-1. Sophomore Erin Griffin (Londonderry,
N.H.) scored her first career goal in the game, and senior
Jennifer Davis (Norwood, Mass.) made her first
varsity start in the net.
The first half of the game was quiet, and while both teams
combined to take 14 shots, neither team could convert and the score
remained 0-0 at the half. In fact, the first goal did not
come until the 72 minute mark, as Erin Griffin managed to get past
the Setters' strong defense and netted an unassisted goal, the
first of her career, to put the Hawks up 1-0. Then, only 39
seconds later, senior forward Heidi Reece (Salem,
N.Y.) laced a second shot past Setter goalkeeper
Courtany Hagen (New Paltz, N.Y.) to secure the
Hawks' lead at 2-0. The goal gives Reece a team-leading three
goals and seven points so far this season.
Finally, with just over two minutes remaining in the game, Pace
midfielder Mary Lynch (Mahopac, N.Y.) penetrated
the Hawks' defense and scored an unassisted goal for the
Setters. The goal was the first given up by keeper Jennifer
Davis in her varsity debut. Davis, who joined the team after
three years with the Saint Anselm Club Soccer team, played all 90
minutes of today's competition. Davis had eight saves in the
game and Hagen had nine. The Hawks took a season-high 20
shots with a .550 shots-on-goal percentage, while the Setters were
accurate nine out of 13 times for a percentage of .692.
Following today's competition, the Hawks remain perfect in
Northeast-10 Conference play with a 3-0 record, going 3-1-1
overall. The Setters drop to 1-3-1 overall (0-3, NE-10). The
Hawks continue their road trip this Wednesday night, September
16th, as they face UMass.-Lowell at 7:00 pm. Be
