(April 29)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team
dropped a non-conference game to the Greyhounds of Assumption
College 8-7, Tuesday night, at Rocheleau Field. The loss drops the
Hawks to 15-29 on the season, while the win improves Assumption to
26-16-1 in 2009.
Saint Anselm took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second, when
Myke Fortier (Andover, Mass.) hit an RBI single
scoring Eric Baca (Franklin, N.H.). Tim
Cooney's (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) fielder's choice RBI gave
the Hawks their second run of the inning when Brett
Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) scored the first run of his
career. The Greyhounds hit the scoreboard in the bottom half of the
inning, on a solo home run from Mike Di Reda (Shrewsbury,
Mass.) to cut Saint Anselm's lead in half.
In the fifth, Saint Anselm scored again when senior shortstop
Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) scored after
reaching on an error to make it 3-1.
The top half of the sixth brought two more runs for the Hawks as
Baca scored on a wild pitch and Cooney's RBI single scoring
Bartlett gave Saint Anselm the 5-1 lead. Assumption answered back
with five runs in the sixth on five hits led by home runs from
Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) and Wally
Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for the 6-5 Greyhound lead.
The Hawks responded in the top of the seventh, when senior
designated hitter Alex Aguilar (Newbury, Mass.)
ripped a two-RBI single scoring Ben Waldrip (Medford,
Mass.) and Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro,
Georgia) to take a 7-6 lead.
Assumption came away with the victory after Derek
Migrants' (Ayer, Mass.) two-RBI triple gave the Greyhounds
the lead and the 8-7 non-conference victory.
Baca had the best day at the plate for the Hawks going 3-for-5
and a run scored, while Perdue reached base three times in five
at-bats by going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Saint Anselm starter Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.)
went six innings allowing six runs and striking out six batters in
the no-decision, while freshman reliever Jeff Donnis
(Hatfield, Mass.) took the loss going two innings and
allowing the two runs in the eighth in the losing effort.
Dave McLean (N. Attleboro, Mass.) picked up the
win for Assumption by pitching a perfect eighth and greyhounds
reliever Tim Dupuis (West Suffield, Conn.) got his
eighth save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 30th, as they will
play their final home game of the season against UMass.-Lowell at
3:30 p.m. at Sullivan Park.
