Manchester, N.H. (April
24)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team, led by
Alex Aguilar's (Newbury, Mass.) walk-off RBI
single and two home runs, defeated the Warriors of Merrimack
College 8-7 at Sullivan Park in non-conference action. The win
improves the Hawks to 14-25 on the year, while the loss drops the
Warriors to 15-21 on the season.
The Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings led by
Aguilar's two-run home run and freshman Dan DeCoste's
(Chelmsford, Mass.) RBI single in the first. In the
second, Aguilar added a two-RBI single and Jeff Criscuolo
(Durham, Conn.) RBI double paced Saint Anselm.
After Merrimack added one in the fourth, Aguilar went deep
again, this time in the bottom of the fifth for the 7-1 advantage.
Merrimack would not go down without a fight, as they would add
three in the eighth and three in the ninth, led by PJ
Farnham's (Andover, Mass.) single, double, run scored and
three RBI's.
In the bottom of the ninth Saint Anselm left fielder
Melvin Perdue (Jonesboro, Georgia) led off the
inning with an RBI double to right field. After a Steve
Panza (Watertown, Mass.) sacrifice-bunt, Merrimack opted
to intentionally walk pinch-hitter Ben Waldrip (Medford,
Mass.) and DeCoste to get to Aguilar. It was Aguilar's
day, as he drilled a single through the right side to ensure the
8-7 non-conference win.
Aguilar finished the day 4-for-5 with two home-runs, two runs
scored and six RBI's.
Saint Anselm starter Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.)
went eight innings allowing three earned runs and striking out
three in the no decision, while reliever Mike O'Rourke (E.
Falmouth, Mass.) went an inning allowing no earned runs in
the win. Merrimack starter Chris Pinette (Norwood,
Mass.) went eight and a third allowing six earned runs in
the loss.
Saint Anselm returns to action tomorrow, April 24th, as they
will host American International for a noon doubleheader.
