Manchester, N.H.
(April 13) -- The Saint Anselm softball team
dropped a Northeast-10 doubleheader to visiting American
International on a blustery Monday afternoon. The Hawks dropped
game one by a 1-0 final and fell in game two, 8-3.
In game one, the only offense came in the top of the fourth
inning as Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, Mass.) gave
the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Leading off the inning, DeMontier
dropped a single in front of the Saint Anselm left fielder, but the
ball was misplayed and rolled all the way to the fence. DeMontier
came all the way around on the three-base error for the lone run of
the game. Both starting pitchers were tremendous throughout, with
Kristen Dolan (Norwood, Mass.) picking up the win
to improve to 10-4 on the season. Dolan surrendered just four Saint
Anselm hits, while striking out 11 Hawks. On the other side, Saint
Anselm junior Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.)
allowed zero earned runs while scattering five hits and striking
out seven.
Saint Anselm struck first in game two in the second inning as an
RBI single to center by Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.)
got lost in the sun and Jackie Giannino (Beverly,
Mass.) came around from first base for the 1-0 lead. The
Yellow Jackets answered back in the next inning, putting together
three hits and taking advantage of two Hawk errors for the 5-1
advantage. The offense in the inning was led by a two-RBI hit by
DeMontier.
AIC added to the lead in the fourth inning on a two-RBI double
to left by Becky Dion (Raynham, Mass.) to make it
7-1 heading to the bottom of the inning. The Hawks answered right
back as Giannino blasted a two-run homer to dead center to make it
7-3 following a leadoff single by Moira McCabe (Brookline,
N.H.). AIC added a late run in the top of the seventh
inning to account for the 8-3 final.
Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) took the loss for
the Hawks to fall to 1-4 on the season. Ashley Deegan
(Durham, Conn.) went five innings for the Yellow Jackets
to improve to 6-7 overall.
With the sweep, Saint Anselm falls to 12-15-1 overall and 4-7-1
in the league, while AIC now sits at 19-13 overall and 11-7 in the
Northeast-10. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday afternoon,
hosting Stonehill for a 3 p.m. start.
