(March 5) -- Saint Anselm could not overcome
blistering shooting from fifth-seeded Assumption as the Hawks fell
to the Greyhounds by a 90-67 final on Thursday evening in the
Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The story of the first half was three-point shooting as the
Greyhounds hit 12-of-17 from deep, shooting 70.6 percent from
behind the arc. Assumption put together a 28-10 run midway through
the half and with 3:46 left in the period, the Greyhounds held a
48-19 advantage. The lead stood at 26 with 1:51 on the clock before
four quick points by junior Giovanni Carenza (East Hanover,
N.J.) made it a 52-30 game at the halftime break. Carenza
led the Hawks with 12 points in the period, while Mike
Baldarelli had 14 points for the Greyhounds to lead all
scorers.
The Hawks continued to fight in the opening of the second half
and cut the lead down to 70-53 midway through the period after a
three by Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.) and a jumper
by Carenza. The Greyhounds were too much for the visitors though as
they advanced with the 23-point victory.
Carenza led the Hawks with 16 points, while Baldarelli led the
Greyhounds with a 26-point effort.
With the loss, Saint Anselm ends its season with a 17-13 overall
record, while Assumption improves to 21-9 overall and will host the
Northeast-10 Championship Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
