Lowell, Mass. (March
25) --The Saint Anselm softball team opened up
Northeast-10 play with a win and a tie with UMass Lowell on
Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took game one by an 8-2 final,
followed a by 7-7 tie in game two of the doubleheader called due to
darkness.
In game one, the Hawks were led by a 2-for-3, three-RBI
performance by senior Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove,
N.Y.) in an 8-2 victory. After the River Hawks jumped out
to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Hawks answered right
back in the top of the second with a two-RBI single to right center
by Theodorou. The Hawks seized the lead for good in the fourth in
an error-filled inning for UMass Lowell. Kate Marquis
(Lincoln, R.I.) scored on a walk, Liz Trafton
(Berwick, Maine) scored on a wild pitch and
Brittany Birch (Bradford, Mass.) scored on an
error for the 5-2 advantage. The Hawks added a single run in the
sixth and a pair in the seventh to account for the 8-2 final.
Junior pitcher Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.)
improved to 6-2 overall with the win, going the distance while
scattering six hits with two earned runs and three strikeouts.
In the second game, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first on an
unearned run by Birch. The River Hawks took the lead in the bottom
of the inning at 3-1 and that margin held until a high-scoring
fourth inning. Saint Anselm regained the lead with three runs in
the top of the inning, led by a two-RBI single by Birch. UMass
Lowell answered right back though with four runs in the bottom of
the fourth for the 7-4 advantage.
Saint Anselm put together two hits and two walks in the top of
the fourth to tie the game at 7-7 before the contest was called due
to darkness. Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) was
2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Birch was 1-for-3 with three
RBI and two runs scored. Lisa Caruso (Granby,
Conn.) got the start, going 3.1 innings before being
relieved by Britnee O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.).
O'Neill settled things down, going 2.2 innings with zero runs and
four hits allowed.
Saint Anselm sits at 9-8-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the
Northeast-10, while UMass Lowell falls to 0-11-1 overall and 0-1-1
in league play. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday afternoon
as the team travels to Southern Connecticut for a league
doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in New Haven.
