New Haven, Conn. (March 28) -- Saint Anselm
dropped a pair of Northeast-10 games at Southern Connecticut on
Saturday afternoon. The Hawks fell in eight innings by a 1-0 final
in game one, followed by a 6-2 setback in the second game.
In game one, junior Megan Lemire (Worcester,
Mass.) held the Owls to just five hits over the first
seven innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the
eighth. After a leadoff double, the runner was sacrificed to third
and scored on a fielder's choice for the game's lone run. Lemire
scattered six hits in the game and fell to 6-3 on the season.
In the second, Southern Conn. jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first inning off pitcher Britnee O'Neill (Ashland,
Mass.) and the score stayed that way until the fifth
inning. The Hawks put up a lone run in the fifth as Morgan
Murphy (Orange, Mass.) blasted a home run to center field
before the Owls answered back in the bottom of the inning with two
runs. The hosts stretched that lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the
sixth before an RBI single by Kayla McEachern (Stoneham,
Mass.) in the seventh scored
Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.)
and cap the scoring. McEachern finished the game 2-for-4 with one
RBI to lead the Hawks. O'Neill went 5.1 innings, giving up nine
hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts.
The Hawks fall to 9-10-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the league, while
the Owls are now 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10. Saint
Anselm's doubleheader scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Pace has
been postponed due to an incoming storm slated for Sunday in the
Northeast.
