-- On Sunday afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team dropped a
non-conference doubleheader to Adelphi University. The Hawks fell
2-1 in eight innings in game one, followed by a 9-3 setback in the
second game.
In game one, the Panthers jumped on top with an unearned run in
the bottom of the second inning. Saint Anselm answered back two
innings later as Morgan Murphy and Jaclyn
Giannino put up back-to-back doubles to tie things at 1-1.
Adelphi scored the game winner in the bottom of the eighth after
the game-winning run reached on one of four Saint Anselm errors on
the day.
Megan Lemire went the distance, scattering
eight hits with two walks and one strikeout, along with a pair of
unearned runs.
In the second game, Adelphi jumped on top 4-0 in the first
inning and the scored stayed that way until the top of the fifth
inning. Liz LeBrun got Saint Anselm on the board
with a home run in the inning and Brittany Birch
added another run later in the inning to make it a 4-2 margin. In
the sixth, the Hawks inched closer as Lemire singled through the
right side to score Moira McCabe to make it 4-3
heading to the bottom of the inning. The Panthers struck for five
runs in the bottom of the inning though to come away with the
sweep.
Britnee O'Neill took the loss for Saint Anselm,
going five innings with 10 hits allowed and seven earned runs.
With the sweep, Saint Anselm falls to 8-8 on the season, while
Adelphi improves to 10-4 overall.
