Women's Lacrosse Earns 1st Win of Season

Milford, N.H. (March 13)-The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team, led by Michaela Rocha's (Rye, N.H.) five goal and four assist effort, earned their first victory of the season by upending the Molloy College Lions 15-13 at the Hampshire Dome on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Hawks to 1-2 on the year, while the loss drops Molloy to 2-2 in 2009.

The first half was back and forth between the two teams, with neither team grabbing a multiple goal lead. With just over thirty seconds left in the period, Molloy midfielder Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored to give the Lions the 7-6 lead over the Hawks at the half.

Molloy struck first in the second half on a goal from Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 8-6 in favor of the visitors. Saint Anselm would then net four consecutive goals by Alyson McDonough (Brunswick, Maine), Tia Karon (Medford, Mass.), Rocha and Courtney Ford (Concord, Mass.) to take a 10-8 lead with twenty minutes remaining in regulation.

With 11:40 left Molloy would make it a one goal game again off a goal from LaFlare to cut the Hawks lead to 12-11. The Hawks would then take control rattling off three straight goals capped by Rocha's fifth goal of the game off a free-position shot for the 15-11 lead with just under four minutes left.

Molloy would add two late goals in the last three minutes but it would not be enough as the Hawks went on to the 15-13 non-conference victory.

Saint Anselm sophomore netminder Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) came up big setting aside 18 shots in her first victory of 2009, while Molloy keeper Alicia Frisch (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the loss.

Freshman midfielder Meghan Smith (E. Rochester, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists for the Hawks and Ford finished the day with three goals from the attack position for Saint Anselm.

The Hawks next game was supposed to be a home match against Stonehill but it has been rescheduled to Monday, March 16th, to be at Stonehill at 7 p.m.
