Cocoa Beach, Florida (March 1) -- The Saint
Anselm softball team opened the 2009 season with a sweep on day one
of their spring trip to Florida. The Hawks downed Saint Vincent by
a 13-0 final in game one and defeated St. Mary's of the Woods, 8-5,
in game two.
Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) threw a
one-hitter in the first game to lead the Hawks in the five-inning
rout. Brittany Birch (Bradford, Mass.) was 2-for-2
with a double, while Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.)
was also 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.
In game two, Brittnee O'Neill (Ashland, Mass.)
got the start and the win, while Lemire came in for the save.
Jaclyn Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with
a pair of doubles, while freshman Morgan Murphy (Orange,
Mass.) blasted a three-run, line-drive homer in the game.
She finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Senior
Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.) also scored
three runs in the game.
The Hawks return to action on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. as the
team takes on Ursuline in a doubleheader in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
