Hawks Fall to Golden Knights in High-Scoring Affair

Albany, N.Y. (February 7) -- Saint Anselm rallied to within four points late in the game before Saint Rose iced the game from the free throw line in a 96-88 victory over the Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Nolan Gymnasium.

In the opening 14 minutes, neither team held a lead of more than six points before the Golden Knights pushed out to a nine-point advantage at 34-25 after a three-point play by Shea Bromirski. Two baskets by John Tello (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and a jumper from Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) pulled the Haws to within three points with under two minutes left in the half before Saint Rose went into the break leading by a 40-36 margin.

The hosts regained the momentum early in the second half behind an 8-2 scoring run to push the lead up to 10 at 48-38. The Hawks chipped away slowly at the lead though and pulled within two points at 54-52 with 11:10 remaining. Saint Rose didn't let the Hawks keep the momentum though and again pushed the lead into double digits at 81-71 with 1:56 left.

The Hawks got into a free throw shooting contest with the Golden Knights in the final minutes and got within four points on four occasions. Saint Rose hit 15 free throws in the last two minutes though to come away with the win. The Golden Knights hit 29-of-34 free throws for the game, while the Hawks were also solid with 23 free throws made, including 16 in the second half alone.

Baudinet finished the game with a team-high 22 points, his eighth 20+ point game of the year and his fifth in the last six games. Tello and Greg Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) each had 17 points, along with 16 points from Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.). Jermaine Clark led all scorers with 25 points for Saint Rose, including 11-for-12 at the free throw line.

With the loss, Saint Anselm drops to 13-9 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose jumps over the Hawks and now stands at 14-10 overall and 10-9 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday night as the Hawks travel to Pace for a 7:30 p.m. start. That game is slated to take place at Pace's New York City campus.
