Hawks Fall in Season Opener 15-12

Winter Haven, Florida (February 28)-The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to the Golden Knights of Gannon University 15-12 in their opening game of the 2009 season Saturday afternoon in Winter Haven, Florida.

Gannon, led by sophomore Kolten Hoffman's (West Middlesex, Penn.) 5-6 effort, scored three runs in the first inning and then added two more in both the third and fourth frames.

In the top of the fifth Hawk second baseman Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.) helped give Saint Anselm the lead back with a two-RBI single with two outs.

After Saint Anselm gained a 9-7 edge, Gannon rallied with six runs in the eighth to take control of the contest and eventually grab the 15-12 win.

The Hawks were led at the plate by freshman first baseman Matt Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.) who went 3-3 with an RBI, three runs and two doubles on the day.

The Hawks hit the field again tomorrow, as they will go to Saint Leo University for doubleheader at noon and 3 p.m.
