Gorham, Maine (February 21)-The Saint Anselm
College men's ice hockey team forced the game against the Huskies
of Southern Maine into overtime on a late third period goal by
sophomore forward Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.),
but came up short in the 4-3 overtime loss. The Hawks fall to
9-14-1 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 11-11-3 on the
season.
Saint Anselm fell behind early on first period goals from senior
forwards Dan Gordon
(Lynnfield,
Mass.) and Kyle Smith
(Auburn,
Maine) to make it 2-0 Southern
Maine going into the first break.
The Hawks hit the scoreboard at the 13:52 mark in the second
period on a goal by senior tri-captain Tom Kerwin
(Whitman,
Mass.) to cut the lead in half
2-1. Senior Mike Nunzianto
(Guilford,
Conn.) and sophomore Ryan
Butler (Arlington,
Mass.) were both credited with
assists on the score. The Huskies would add another on Gordon's
15th of the season to make it 3-1 heading into the third period.
Hawk sophomore John Penny
(Andover,
Mass.) would cut into the
Southern Maine lead on a goal from Nunzianto and Jim Toomey
(Billerica,
Mass.) to make it 3-2 at the 6:54
mark. Noonan's equalizer was netted after a Hawk timeout with 1:14
left in regulation.
In the overtime period, Southern Maine forward Chris
Travis (Scituate,
Mass.) would score the
game-winner with less than a minute and a half left to lift the
Huskies to the 4-3 overtime win.
Senior goaltender Pat Gallagher
(Framingham,
Mass.) set aside 32 shots in the
losing effort, while Southern Maine netminder Jamie Gilbert
(Lewiston,
Maine) made 27 stops in the win.
The Hawks return to action, Thursday, February 26th, in their
final regular season match-up with NE-10 foe Stonehill College at 7
p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
