Syracuse, N.Y. (February 20)-The Saint Anselm
College women's ice hockey team fell to Division I Syracuse
University 3-0 Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The loss drops
the Hawks to 15-7-2 overall, while the win improves the Orange to
8-15-3 in their inaugural season.
The Orange took a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals from
forwards Cheyenne Bojeski
(Hamilton,
Ontario) and Jessica
Frump (Saugus,
California). Freshman forward
Lisa Mullan
(Victoria,
British Columbia) finished the
period with two helpers, while Syracuse goalie Lucy
Schoedel (Ithaca,
N.Y.) set aside nine shots to
preserve the lead in the first period. Freshman goaltender
Amy Zappen (Huntington
Beach,
California) made six saves in the
first stanza for the Hawks.
Syracuse continued to add to their lead in the second period on
a goal from Keeta Koalska (Forest
Lake,
Minnesota) to make it 3-0 just
over half-way through the second period. Saint Anselm was out shot
24-13 through the first two periods. Zappen made 12 stops in the
period, while Syracuse goalie Steph Jones
(Thornhill,
Ontario) made three saves in
relief of Schoedel.
The Orange continued to apply pressure as they had 12 shots to
the Hawks four in the final period to out shoot Saint Anselm 36-17
in the game. Neither team could score in the third period, as
Syracuse skated on to the 3-0 shutout win.
Zappen made 33 saves in between the pipes for the Hawks, while
Schoedel and Jones combined to make 17 saves in the shutout.
The Hawks and the Orange square off again tomorrow, February
21st, as they will play a 2 p.m. game at the Onondaga War Memorial.
