Syracuse, N.Y. (February 21)-The Saint Anselm
College women's ice hockey team fell to Division I Syracuse
University 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Onondaga War Memorial. The
loss drops the Hawks to 15-8-2 on the season, while the win
improves the Orange to 9-15-3 in their inaugural season.
The Hawks took struck first on a goal by senior tri-captain
Kelsey Johnson
(Byfield,
Mass.) off a pass from freshman
forward Cierra Romaldo (Chuluota, Florida) to make
it 1-0 Hawks just over eight minutes into the first period. Saint
Anselm would hold the lead for almost 10 minutes until Syracuse
forward Steph Marty
(Nussbaumen,
Switzerland) tallied the
equalizer to make it 1-1 heading into the first break.
After that it was all Orange as they would net three unanswered
goals in the third period by forwards Rebecca Gordon
(St. Catherines,
Ontario), Marty and Nikki Leone (Trenton,
Ontario) for the 4-1 final.
Hawk sophomore goalie Carley
Berry
(Danvers,
Mass.) stopped 24 shots and gave
up three goals in the loss, while Lucy Shoedel
(Ithaca,
N.Y.) set aside 17 shots in the
win.
The Hawks return to action on February 28th at Holy Cross where
they will compete in the ECAC Open Championships.
