Manchester, N.H. (February 14)-On a day when
the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey program celebrated
senior day for five players and their manager, the Hawks, led by
senior Kathleen Twomey's (Londonderry, N.H.) two
goals, skated to a 2-1 victory over the Seahawks of Salve Regina
University on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The win
improves the Hawks to 15-6-2 on the year, while the loss drops the
Seahawks to 14-8-0 on the season.
The first period featured seven penalties, five of which were on
the Hawks, and a key five-on-three penalty kill to keep it tied at
zero heading into the period.
Saint Anselm struck 33 ticks into the second period when
freshman Sami Tatu
(Waterford,
Michigan) took a shot from the
blue line and Twomey redirected the shot past Salve Regina goalie
Rebecca Simmons (Averill
Park,
N.Y.) to make it 1-0 Hawks.
Senior forward Bianca DeSantis
(Georgetown,
Mass.) was also credited with an
assist. The Seahawks bounced back just over a minute later when
Kristen Cokely
(Cambridge,
Mass.) beat Saint Anselm goalie
Amy Zappen (Huntington
Beach,
California) to even the game at
one heading into the final period.
In the third the Hawks took the lead for good on the game-winner
from Twomey, with the assists again going to DeSantis and Tatu for
the 2-1 ECAC East victory.
Zappen set aside 21 shots in the win, while Simmons made 25
stops in the losing effort.
The Hawks return to action, Friday, February 20th, as they will
travel to Division I Syracuse for a 7 p.m. start.
