Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Hawks Fall to Valiants 6-3

Manchester, N.H. (February 13)-The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team fell to the Valiants of Manhattanville College 6-3 on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The loss drops the Hawks to 14-6-2 overall and 12-5-1 in league play, while the victory improves Manhattanville to 17-5-0 overall and 15-3-0 in ECAC East action.

The Valiants took a 2-0 lead in the first period even though the Hawks out shot them 14-11. Manhattanville forward Shannon Coffey (Malden, Mass.) scored at the 2:18 mark off a pass from Monique Rafferty (Clifton Park, N.Y.). The Valiants scored again with just 39 seconds on the clock on a goal from forward Jess Scioli (North Reading, Mass.).

The second period featured two goals by each squad. The Valiants took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Michele Wieczorek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) just 1:17 into the period. The Hawks finally hit the scoreboard at the 9:20 mark on a power-play goal from senior tri-captain Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.). Sophomore defenseman Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.) was credited with the assist. Five minutes later, Manhattanville forward Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal for the 4-1 lead. Less than a minute later, senior tri-captain Kathleen Twomey (Londonderry, N.H.) took a between the legs pass from Johnson to beat Valiant netminder Karine Turmel (Ste-Marguerite, Quebec) to cut the lead to 4-2 heading into the final stanza.

After the Hawks received a five minute major for boarding, Valiant captain Erin Brawley (Lordship, Conn.) scored at the twice to make it 6-2 in favor of the visitors. Hawk freshman Liz Burg (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal with just over six minutes left, but it would not be enough as the Valiants would skate to a 6-3 win.

Hawk goaltenders Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.) and Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each gave up three goals in the losing effort, while Turmel made 27 saves to win.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow, as they will host Salve Regina at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Arena and celebrate senior day.
