BOSTON, MASS. - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team concluded their four-game road trip this evening in
Boston, Mass., when they took on the University of Massachusetts
Boston Beacons. The Hawks fought hard, but ended up taking
their second loss of the season by a score of 3-2. Freshman
Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.)
notched two points in the game, assisting on both Hawk goals.
The Beacons took an early lead, just 5:41 in the first period,
when Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.) netted her
third goal of the season on a power play to put the Beacons up
1-0. Hawk freshman Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury,
Mass.) was quick to respond, scoring one for the Hawks
less than five minutes later, assisted by Giarrusso, to knot the
score at one apiece.
However, midway through the second period, Lauren Duran
(Woburn, Mass.) and Katie Kirwan (Centerville,
Mass.) knocked in a pair to give the Beacons a 3-1
lead. Saint Anselm's Michelle Lacombe (Delafield,
Wisc.) got one back for the Hawks in the third period,
assisted by Giarrusso and Molly Corl (Danvers,
Mass.), but the offense was unable to put together a
complete comeback, as the Hawks fell to the Beacons 3-2.
UMass goaltender Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill,
Conn.) made 35 saves in the game to pick up her fourth win
of the season, and Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) stopped 15 shots, taking her first loss of the
season. The win lifts the Beacons to 4-4 (3-4 ECAC East),
while the Hawks fall to 6-2-1 (5-2-1 ECAC). The Hawks return
home this Friday, December 11th, to host the Nichols College Bison
in an ECAC East conference match-up beginning at 4:00 pm.
