Hawks Soar Past Bison 6-0 in Final Game of 2009

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team returned home this afternoon to play their final game of 2009.  The Hawks defeated the Nichols College Bison 6-0 to nab their seventh win of the season.  Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) both scored three points in the game.

The Hawks did not waste any time, as Angela Zevnik laced a slap shot from the left side into the net just 3:06 into the game.  The power play goal was assisted by Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.).  Towards the end of the first period, two Bison penalties, committed four minutes apart, gave the Hawks two more power-play opportunities.  At 15:24, Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) sent a hard shot from the top corner, which was tapped in by Picarello for the Hawks' second goal.  Four minutes later, Giarrusso netted a slap shot from out in front, assisted by Angela Zevnik, to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead before the end of the first.

Seven minutes and forty seconds into the second period, Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) sent the puck towards the net from the right side, and Rosemarie Giarrusso flipped it past goaltender Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) for her second goal of the game, the first Hawk goal at even strength.  Three minutes later, Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colo.) netted an unassisted goal for the Hawks on a fast break.  At 13:18, Zappen flipped a shot into the top of the net, to secure the Hawks a 6-0 victory.

Freshman Meghan Grant (Melrose, Mass.) made 11 saves in the game, en route to her first career shutout.  The Hawk goalie has allowed just one goal in two career appearances, for a team-best 0.50 goals against average.  Starting goaltender Melissa Mansfield made 20 saves in 30:31, allowing five goals and taking the loss.  Christine Mazza (Dedham, Mass.) made 21 saves in 29:29 minutes of relief, allowing just one goal.

The win lifts the Hawks to 7-2-1 (6-2-1 ECAC East), while the Bison fall to 1-6-1 (1-5-1 ECAC East).  The Hawks will now take a four-week break for the winter holidays.  The team returns to action after New Years on January 8, 2010, to host Division I team Syracuse University in the first of six consecutive home games in the month of January.  The Hawks will take on the Orange in Sullivan Arena at 4:00 pm.
