Manchester, N.H. (December 8) -- Saint Anselm
shot 52.5 percent from the field and forced 18 Saint Michael's
turnovers as the Hawks downed Saint Michael's by an 80-68 final in
the 100th all-time meeting between the two teams. The Hawks lead
the series by a 58-42 margin.
In the first half, the Hawks took a quick 10-3 lead following a
layup by Greg Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) with 15:43
left in the first. With the Hawks leading by just three at 24-21,
Saint Anselm put together a quick 9-0 run in 1:15 that was capped
by a jumper from Hakeem Williams (Spring Valley,
N.Y.) to seize a 33-21 advantage. The Purple Knights
weren't going quietly though as Tyler Schilling
scored with 2:12 left in the half to cut the lead to 34-31 Hawks.
Saint Anselm scored a late basket to make it a 36-31 margin at the
break.
Saint Anselm's lead in the second half never fell below three
points and ballooned to 66-54 with 7:34 left after back-to-back
three's from Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.) and
Vetrano. The Purple Knights briefly closed to within eight points
late before the Hawks put the game out of reach.
Vetrano led the team with 22 points and six assists, while
Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), Jack
Keough (Owego, N.Y.) and Williams each added 11 points.
Luptowski also finished in double figures with 10 points, while
Keough added a team-high seven rebounds. The Hawks were 5-for-9
from three-point land in the second half as well.
Schilling led the Purple Knights with 18 points and seven
rebounds, while Qua'ron Pinckney added 13 points.
Saint Anselm is now 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast-10,
while the Purple Knights drop to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Saint Anselm returns to action on Thursday night as the team
travels to Bloomfield for a 7:30 p.m. start.
