PLYMOUTH, N.H. - After a ten-day break, the
Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team travelled to Plymouth, N.H.
tonight to take on the Plymouth State University Panthers in an
ECAC East conference game. The Hawks soared to an early 5-0
lead in the first period, to earn their fifth win of the season by
a score of 10-2. Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm
Beach, Fla.), Molly Corl (Danvers,
Mass.), and Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) each scored four points in the victory.
Giarrusso put the Hawks on the board early, netting her fourth
goal of the season at 6:20 in the first period, assisted by Aly
Zappen. At 11:32, captain Maria Dougherty
(Middletown, R.I.) scored her third of the season, off a
pass from freshman Molly Corl. Zappen then scored two quick
goals in the next three minutes, and Angela Zevnik
(Greenfield, Wisc.) added a fifth unanswered shot to run
the score to 5-0 before the end of the first.
Towards the end of the second period, senior Daniella
Lyons (Greene, Maine) scored her first goal of the season,
followed by another from Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury,
Mass.), to extend the Hawks' lead to seven heading into
the third period. Just 35 second into the third period,
Panther Jaimie Camara (Portsmouth, R.I.) finally
gave Plymouth State their first goal of the game, netting a quick
goal off the faceoff. Dougherty replied just 22 seconds
later, potting her second goal of the game before the end of the
first minute of the period. Corl then added a power-play goal
at 14:29. Danielle Shea (Billerica, Mass.)
fought back for the Panthers, netting a power-play goal of her own
at 18:06, and with 25 seconds remaining in the game, assistant
captain Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) notched her
team-leading fifth goal of the season, to run the final score to
10-2 Hawks.
The Hawks outshot the Panthers 46-11 in the competition.
Hawk goaltender Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.)
picked up her first win of the season, making nine saves and
allowing two goals in a complete game in the net. Starting
goalie Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) made 25
saves in 39:00 minutes, allowing seven goals and taking the loss,
before being replaced by Lauren Bonanni (Ridgefield,
Conn.), who finished out the last 21 minutes, making 11
saves and allowing three goals.
The loss drops the Panthers to 0-6 (0-6 ECAC) on the season,
while the Hawks improve to 5-1-1 (4-1-1 ECAC). The Hawks
continue their road trip to Gorham, Maine tomorrow evening to take
on the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC East game
beginning at 4:00 pm.
