MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm men's ice
hockey team opened its NESCAC weekend this evening, hosting the
Connecticut College Camels in an inter-conference game at Sullivan
Arena. Though the Hawks' offense dominated the majority of
the game, the Camels' defense was solid, as they took the game
4-1. The win lifts the Camels to 1-4 (1-2 NESCAC ) while the
Hawks fall to 2-2 (1-2 ECAC).
The Camels struck early, as sophomore Julien Boutet
(Amos, Quebec) tapped an unassisted goal through the legs
of goaltender Alex Wyse (Amherst, N.Y.) to give
the Camels a quick 1-0 lead just 49 seconds into the game.
Later in the period, at 15:56, classmate J.J. McGregor
(Wichita, Kans.) slapped a hard shot at Wyse, who blocked
it, but he was unable to keep the puck in front of him, as it
ricocheted past him into the net for the second goal of the
game. Michael O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.)
and Greg Lever (Orangeville, Ont.) assisted on the
play.
The Hawks' backline stood firm for the next 18 minutes, but at
13:20 in the second period, senior Trevor Bradley (West
Hartford, Conn.) found a hole in the four-on-four defense,
and scored the Camels' third goal of the game, assisted by juniors
Ryan Riffe (South Berwick) and Ross James
(Orono, Maine). At 6:07 in the third period,
sophomore Ryan Holley (Owings, Md.) got one back
for the Hawks, netting an unassisted, wrap-around goal from behind
the net to put the Hawks on the board. However, at 17:40, the
Hawks' pulled their goalie, and just 40 seconds later, Ryan Riffe
took the puck to the Saint Anselm side of the ice, and tapped in an
empty-net goal from just past the blue line to give the Camels
their first victory of the season by a score of 4-1.
The Hawks outshot the Camels 46-25, putting more shots on goal
than the Camels in all three periods. However, goaltender
Greg Parker (Trenton, Ont.) played solid defense
in the net, making a total of 45 saves and allowing just one goa,l
to pick up his first win of the season. Alex Wyse made 21
saves in 57:51 minutes in the net, allowing three goals and earning
his first loss.
The Hawks continue their homestand tomorrow afternoon when they
host fellow NESCAC conference member Tufts University. The
Hawks will take on the Jumbos in Sullivan Arena beginning at 3:00
pm.
