Saint Anselm, Franklin Pierce Victorious on Day One

Manchester, N.H. (December 29) -- On day one of the 2009 Saint Anselm Holiday Classic, Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce came out victorious with a pair of lopsided non-conference victories. Franklin Pierce opened the day with a 64-44 win over Dominican, while Saint Anselm rolled past Mercy in an 81-42 final.

Game One: Franklin Pierce 64, Dominican 44
In the FPU win, senior All-American Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) led all scorers with a 19-point, 16-rebound double-double, along with a 12 point, nine-rebound showing by Tori Ahrens (East Greenwich, R.I.). The Ravens never trailed and held Dominican to just 24.2 percent shooting from the field. Dominican was led by 10 points and seven rebounds by senior Rachelle Sainten (Spring Valley, N.Y.).

The Chargers pulled to within 12 points in the second half before the Ravens regained control and remained perfect on the season at 9-0 overall. Dominican drops to 6-4 on the season with the loss.

Game Two: Saint Anselm 81, Mercy 42
Saint Anselm had four players in double figures, including double-doubles by Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) and Courtney May (Lakeville, Mass.). Howard posted her 20th career double-double in just 36 career games and she finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. May led the team with 13 rebounds and added 14 points and three blocks.

Sophomore guard Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark.) had 14 points and hit four three-pointers in 29 minutes of play, while senior Grace Harrington (Salem, Mass.) enjoyed her best game of the season with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks in 25 minutes off the bench.

Mercy was led by 11-point showings by Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn.), Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.), but committed 20 turnovers and shot just 21.7 percent from the field in the defeat. Saint Anselm improves to 3-6 overall on the season, while Mercy falls to 3-6 overall. The 39-point victory was the largin margin of victory for a Saint Anselm team since a 45-point win in 2003 over Green Mountain.
