Manchester, N.H. (December 2) -- Shooting woes
plagued Saint Anselm on Wednesday night as the Hawks dropped a
61-52 final to visiting Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play
at Stoutenburgh Gym. The Hawks shot 32.2 percent from the
field in the game.
In the first half, neither team led by more than four points
until the Skyhawks opened up a five-point lead at 19-14 after a
three from Brian Hamor (Guilderland, N.Y.).
Stonehill built the lead to nine at 28-19 before a quick 5-0 spurt
by the Hawks got the hosts back to a 28-24 deficit with 2:45 left.
The only scoring for the remainder of the half came in the form of
two free throws by senior A.J. Rudowitz (Monroe Township,
N.J.) to give the Skyhawks a 30-24 halftime edge.
Stonehill shot 54.5 percent in the second half and held a 32-24
lead in the early going of the period. The Hawks answered though
with an 11-3 run though and tied the game on a fastbreak layup by
Greg Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) with 15:54 on the
clock. Stonehill built the lead into double digits midway through
the half and led by as many as 16 points with 3:38 left. The Hawks
chipped away and got the lead down to eight points late before
dropping the nine-point final.
Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) led three
Hawks in double figures with 14 points to go along with seven
rebounds. Vetrano added 13 points, along with 10 points from
Hakeem Williams (Spring Valley, N.Y.).
Mike Kernan (Medford, N.J.) had 16 points for the
Skyhawks, along with 13 points and nine boards for Rudowitz.
With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the
Northeast-10, while Stonehill is now 4-1 overall and a perfect 3-0
in league play. Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday
afternoon as the Hawks travel to UMass Lowell for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
