Hawks Fall to Southern Conn. in Season Finale

Manchester, N.H. (November 7) -- In the 2009 season finale, the Saint Anselm football team dropped a 71-14 final to visiting Southern Connecticut at Grappone Stadium. Saint Anselm ends the season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league play.

The Owls jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead in the opening 4:31, putting together two quick drives for the early lead. The Hawks got on the board with 7:37 left in the opening period though as freshman quarterback Michael Pierce (Andover, Mass.) hit senior Ryan Fritch (Winsted, Conn.) for an eight-yard touchdown to cut the lead down to 13-7. The Owls took control later in the quarter though with touchdown passes of 52 and 61 yards from quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) for a 26-7 lead after one quarter. Southern Connecticut pushed that lead to 43-7 at the halftime break before pulling away for the 71-14 victory.

In the third quarter, Pierce hit freshman Joe Robichaud (Madison, Conn.) with an 18-yard touchdown pass and in the process set the Saint Anselm single-season record for touchdown passes with 21 on the season. Pierce finished the day 23-for-49 with two touchdowns and two interceptions while throwing for 181 yards. Sophomore wideout Marc Wilson (Farmington, Conn.) led the Hawks with eight receptions, while Robichaud had a team-high 65 receiving yards while catching six passes, including a touchdown. Wilson also ended up with 231 all-purpose yards in the game.

Defensively for Saint Anselm, senior All-America candidate Dan Bohenek (Bridgewater, Mass.) capped off his record-setting career with 10 tackles, each of them solo stops. Bohenek ends his Saint Anselm career with 283 tackles, including 183 of them solo stops, which is a Saint Anselm career record. His 283 total tackles ranks him second on the all-time list. Freshman Chris Bent (Dracut, Mass.) capped off an outstanding freshman season with 10 tackles on the afternoon as well. Bohenek ends the season with nine double-digit tackle games, the most in a single-season by any Saint Anselm player in program history.

For the Owls, Roberts finished 11-of-14 passing for 244 yards and four touchdowns, while Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 17 careers. Teammate John Wiechmann (Buxton, Maine) carried the ball 20 times for 121 yards and added a touchdown of his own. As a team, the Owls rushed for 447 yards. Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) pulled down three passes for Southern Conn. for 126 yards and two touchdowns as well.

For the season, the Hawks set a number of single-season records. In addition to the two tackle records by Bohenek, Pierce and Wilson set nearly every major offensive mark. During the 2009 campaign, Pierce set the Saint Anselm single-season marks for total offense (2,933 yards), plays of total offense (569), passing attempts (458), completions (237), passing yards (2,629 yards), most passing yards per game (262.9) and most passing touchdowns (21). He also set single-game records for each of those categories as well.

Wilson set single-season marks for receptions (82), receiving yards (860), most touchdown receptions (7-tied) and all-purpose yards (1,817). He also set single-game records for receptions, receiving yards and all-purpose yards.
