Manchester, N.H. (November 6) -- The Saint
Anselm College women's ice hockey team opened the 2009 season with
a 7-0 ECAC East victory over the Saint Michael's College Purple
Knights at Sullivan Arena on Friday night.
The Hawks hit the scoreboard first four and a half
minutes into the first period with a goal from freshman forward
Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.). The goal
was Picarello's first of her career and the assist went to junior
transfer Sarah Ellins (Greeley, Colorado), her
first point in a Saint Anselm uniform.
The Purple Knight's started the second period on
the 5-on-3 power-play for over a minute. The Hawks cleared the puck
out the zone on three separate occasions to kill the power-play and
take back control of the game.
Sophomore forward Michelle Lacombe
(Delafield, Wisconsin) would net a shorthanded goal at the
5:37 mark, and her first goal of 2009 by redirecting a shot by
sophomore defender Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) to
give Saint Anselm the 2-0 lead. Just over half way through the
period Corl would assist on another goal, this time by freshman
forward Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach,
Florida), the first of her career. The Hawks closed out
the period with a power-play goal by Ellins from sophomore
Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, California) and
junior Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) to give
Saint Anselm a 4-0 lead heading into the third and final period.
The Hawks would net three more goals in the third
period. Junior defender Alexa Hingston (Charlestown,
Mass.) scored her first of 2009 just over five minutes
into the period. Freshman forward Kaitlin O'Brien (South
Boston, Mass.) earned her first career goal three minutes
later. Byrne tacked on a late goal for the 7-0 Hawks victory.
Hawks sophomore netminder Amy Zappen
(Huntington Beach, California) made 16 saves in the
shutout, while freshman goalie Erin Stevens (Watertown,
Conn.) stopped 27 shots and allowed all seven goals in the
losing effort.
The Hawks return to action Friday, November 13th,
as they will hit the road to face Norwich University at 7 p.m.
