NORTHFIELD, VT - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team travelled to Northfield, Vermont this evening to take
on the Norwich University Cadets in their first away game of the
season. The Cadets ran up an early three-goal lead in the
first period, and though the Hawks scored two in the third, they
were unable to erase the early deficit, as they fell 3-2. The
Cadets won their fourth straight game to remain perfect at 4-0 (3-0
ECAC East) while the Hawks evened their record to 1-1 (1-1 ECAC
East).
The Cadets did not waste any time, as freshman
Jacqueline Perez (San Gabriel, Calif.) scored her
first career goal just 3:37 into the game to put the Cadets up
1-0. The goal was assisted by sophomore Caitie
Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) and junior Brittane
Michaud (Lewiston, Maine), who notched their first and
second assists of the season, respectively.
At 10:42, Hawk sophomore Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.) was sent to the penalty box for checking, and at
12:40, with just two seconds left in the power play, sophomore
Melissa Rundlett (Saco, Maine) netted her second
goal of the season, assisted by classmates Amanda Wilks
(Winnipeg, Man.) and Julie Fortier
(Saint-Malachie, Que.). Just over a minute later, at
14:02, Wilks extended the Cadets' lead to three, as she converted a
pass from senior Sophie Leclerc (Barre, Vt.) to
make the score 3-0 before the end of the first period.
The Cadets held onto their lead through the second period, but
just 38 seconds into the third, juniors Kristen Byrne
(Duxbury, Mass.) and Sarah Ellins (Greeley,
Colo.) set up Aly Zappen, who scored a power-play goal to
put the Hawks on the board. Nine minutes later, at 9:39,
Byrne scored a second power-play goal, assisted by Ellins and
senior captain Maria Dougherty (Middletown, R.I.)
to cut the Cadets' lead to one. However, the Hawks were
unable to complete the comeback, as they took their first loss of
the season by a score of 3-2.
The Hawks' goaltender, junior assistant captain Carley
Berry (Danvers, Mass.), made 25 saves in her first
appearance of the season, and Cadet goalie Cindy Fortin
(Quebec City, Que.) stopped 16 shots. The Hawks
return to action tomorrow afternoon, November 14th, as they
continue their weekend road trip to Castleton State University for
their third ECAC East game of the season. The game is
scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
