CASTLETON, VT. - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team continued its three-game road trip this afternoon to
Castleton, Vt., as they took on the Castleton State College
Spartans in their second away game of the season. The Hawks'
offense was dominant, as they scored three quick goals in the first
period, two in the second, and three more in the third, soaring to
an 8-1 victory over the Spartans. The Hawks are now 2-1 (2-1
ECAC) while the Spartans fall to 2-4 (2-2 ECAC).
Sophomore Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn, Virg.)
wasted no time, as classmate Bridget Sylvester (Randolph,
N.J.) and freshman Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm
Beach, Fla.) set her up to score the first goal of the
game, just 2:23 after the starting whistle. Less than a
minute later, sophomore Molly Corl (Danvers,
Mass.) scored an unassisted breakaway goal to give the
Hawks a quick 2-0 lead. At 17:49, freshman Kathryn
Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored her second career
goal, assisted by assistant captain Kristen Byrne (Duxbury,
Mass.).
Halfway through the second period, Byrne scored a goal of her
own, her team-leading third of the season, assisted by Giarrusso
and senior team captain Maria Dougherty (Middletown,
R.I.). Before the end of the period, Giarrusso
picked up her third point of the game, scoring the team's fifth
goal with assists from juniors Sarah Ellins (Greeley,
Colo.) and captain Alexa Hingston (Charlestown,
Mass.), running the Hawks' lead to 5-0. With just
over a minute remaining in the second period, Meagan
Hulbert (Barre, Vt.) put the Spartans on the board,
scoring her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman
Christine Newton (Ogden, Utah).
Six minutes into the third period, Dougherty scored her first
goal of the season, assisted by Sylvester and sophomore
Marissa Serafino (Rutland, Vt.). With one
minute remaining in the game, Hingston tacked on the team's seventh
goal of the night, and Dougherty and Byrne each picked up their
third point of the game with another assist. Then, with just
five seconds remaining in the game, freshman Corinne Myers
(San Jose, Calif.) scored her first career goal, assisted
by Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) and Molly
Corl to put the final score at 8-1, Hawks.
Freshman Meghan Grant (Melrose, Mass.) made her
first career start in goal, making seven saves and allowing just
one goal in the game to pick up her first win. Spartan goalie
Amanda Hoy (Brockport, N.Y.) made 47 saves in the
game and allowed all eight goals. The Hawks outshot the
Spartans 55-8 and scored on three out of their five power plays for
a .600 percentage. Byrne, Giarrusso, and Dougherty each
scored three points in the game on one goal and two assists.
Sylvester, Hingston, and Corl all recorded two points in the game.
The Hawks will conclude their road trip next Friday, November
20th, when they travel to Henniker, Mass. to take on the New
England College Pilgrims in their fourth ECAC game of the
season. The league matchup will begin at 4:00 pm.
