HENNIKER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team concluded their first road trip of the season this
evening, as they took on the New England College Pilgrims in an
ECAC East league game. Assistant captain Kristen
Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal to
propel the Hawks to a 1-0 victory over the Pilgrims. The win
lifts the Hawks to 3-1 (3-1 ECAC) while the Pilgrims fall to 4-2
(3-2 ECAC).
The defense on both sides seemed impenetrable, holding off every
offensive charge of the game, until, at 18:30 in the third period,
with just a minute and a half remaining in the game, freshmen
Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and
Corinne Myers (San Jose, Calif.) set up junior
Kristen Byrne, who finally found a way past Pilgrim goaltender
Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) to score the only
goal of the game and give the Hawks a 1-0 victory.
White made 22 saves in the game, but the Pilgrims could not get
anything past sophomore Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.), who completed her second shutout in two starts
this season. Zappen, who made 24 saves in the game, is the
only goalie in the ECAC East who has played at least one game this
season and has yet to cede a goal.
After going 2-1 on the road, the Hawks return home tomorrow
afternoon to host the Salve Regina University Seahawks in an ECAC
East league game. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
