BRUNSWICK, MAINE - The Saint Anselm women's ice
hockey team travelled to Brunswick, Maine this evening to take on
the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the first of four games against
teams in the NESCAC conference this season. The Polar Bears
took the lead first but the Hawks responded three-fold, for a final
score of 3-1. The win lifts the Hawks to 4-1-1 (3-1-1 ECAC), while
the Polar Bears fall to 1-1 (0-0 NESCAC).
After a scoreless first period, Polar Bear senior Maria
Nicolais (Syracuse, N.Y.) opened the scoring, netting the
first goal of the game at 14:49 in the second period. The
goal was assisted by Katie Herter (Topsfield,
Mass.). Just over one minute later, freshman
Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) tied
the score with an unassisted, short-handed goal at 16:08.
Halfway through the third period, freshman Kaitlin O'Brien
(South Boston, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal to put the
Hawks up 2-1. Five minutes later, O'Brien scored a second
unassisted goal, to run the final score to 3-1.
Sophomore Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach,
Calif.), who was named Goalie of the Week this morning for
the second time this season, made a season-high 30 saves in the
game, allowing just one goal and claiming the win.
Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) turned aside 24
shots, allowing all three goals and takes the loss. The Hawks
return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday, when they travel
to Plymouth, N.H. to take on the Plymouth State Panthers at 6:00 pm
on December 4th.
