Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Power Plays Plague Hawks in 6-2 Loss at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm men's ice hockey team travelled to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. this evening to complete their season-opening road trip at Skidmore College.  The Thoroughbreds' offense was too much for the Hawks, as they took their first loss of the season by a score of 6-2.  The Thoroughbreds are now 2-0 (2-0 ECAC East) and the Hawks fall to 1-1 (1-1 ECAC East).

The Thoroughbreds got on the board first, as Matt Czerkowicz (Blackstone, Mass.) opened the scoring at 11:38 in the first period.  The Hawks then got two overlapping penalties to give the Thoroughbreds a five-on-three power play.  Skidmore capitalized on the advantage, scoring two power play goals before the Hawks could return to full strength.  At 16:42 in the first, freshman Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) got the Hawks on the board, with a goal assisted by Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) and Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.)

One minute into the second period, a Hawk penalty gave the Thoroughbreds another one-man advantage, and in just four seconds, Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass.) netted his second goal of the game to make the score 4-1.  Thirty-two seconds later, the Thoroughbreds snuck a fifth goal past freshman goaltender Corey Cotnoir (Bow, N.H.), and with that Alex Wyse (Amherst, N.Y.) took over in the net.

At 8:48 in the second period, Noonan scored his first goal of the season, assisted by fellow team captain Nick Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.), but that was all the Hawks' offense could muster.  Skidmore's Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass.) tacked on one more goal midway through the third period for a final score of 6-2.

The Hawks and Thoroughbreds each took 29 shots on goal, but Skidmore was four-for-four on the power play, while Saint Anselm was just one-for-seven, and that made all the difference in the game.  Thoroughbred goaltender Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 27 saves and allowed two goals en route to his second win of the season.  Cotnoir made 13 saves in 21:37 minutes, allowing five goals and receiving the loss.  Wyse made 10 saves in 38:23 minutes of relief.

The Hawks return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday to begin a five-game home stand, extending into January.  The Hawks will host the Assumption College Greyhounds on Wednesday, December 2nd, for their first Northeast-10 game of the season, beginning at 7:00 pm.
