MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's
soccer team had a strong outing this afternoon, taking down the
Adelphi University Panthers by a score of 2-0. The Panthers
(7-4, 5-4 NE-10), who were ranked No. 10 in the nation last week,
were held scoreless over 90 minutes of play by the Hawks' defense
and goalkeeper Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree,
Mass.), en route to her second shutout of the
season. The Hawks (6-4-1, 5-3 NE-10), who are ranked ninth in
the NSCAA East regional poll this week, upset the regional No. 6
Panthers.
The Hawks got on the board early as less than seven minutes into
the game, at 6:51, junior Jennifer Pearl (Stoughton,
Mass.) dribbled past Panther goalkeeper Dorothy
Connolly (Bethpage, N.Y.) and netted a crossing shot,
giving the Hawks a quick 1-0 lead. Senior Michelle
Dickson (Manchester, N.H.) assisted on the play.
The next hour of the game was quiet, neither team able to get
past the opposing team's defenders until halfway through the second
period, at 68:34, a Panther foul set up a free kick for the Hawks
near midfield. Sophomore defender Jillian DaSilva
(East Taunton, Mass.) took the free kick and passed it to
Jennifer Pearl in the box. Pearl sent a quick tap to
sophomore Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) who
laced it across the goal into the bottom-left corner of the
net. The goal secured the Hawks a 2-0 lead, which they held
onto for the remainder of the game.
The Panthers outshot the Hawks 16-9, but keeper Jacqueline
Cooney kept the Panthers off the board, making eight saves in the
game. Panther goalie Dorothy Connelly turned aside three
shots. The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, October 6th as
they host the Merrimack College Warriors in a Northeast-10
Conference matchup. The competition will be held at Melucci
Field beginning at 3:30 pm.
