Manchester, N.H. (October 17) -- Assumption
junior running back Herbert Woodard (Bridgeton,
N.J.) rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns to lead the
Greyhounds to a 45-12 win over Saint Anselm on Homecoming on
Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks got off to a good start as sophomore standout
Marc Wilson (Farmington, Conn.) tip-toed the far
sideline on the opening kickoff, returning the kick for a
touchdown. The return was the second kickoff return for a touchdown
in Hawk history and the second-longest kickoff return in Saint
Anselm history as well. After the Hawks kicked the ball off,
Woodard took the first play from scrimmage 64 yards for an
Assumption touchdown and after just 30 seconds of play, the score
was 7-6 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Woodard added a three-yard TD run and the Greyhounds added a
field goal for a 17-6 first-quarter lead. Woodard and quarterback
Andrew Kupec (Wyckoff, N.J.) added the next three
touchdowns, all on the ground, and the score was 38-6 with
8:57 left in the third. On the ensuing kickoff, Wilson got stood up
and stripped and Lance Mitchell (Boynton Beach,
Fla.) took the fumble in from the 20-yard line for a 45-6
advantage.
The Hawks scored their final points of the game on a drive set up
by a 70-yard kickoff return by Wilson. On the next play,
Michael Pierce (Andover, Mass.) found junior
Marcel Bouie (Stone Mountain, Ga.) in the end zone
for a 20-yard touchdown.
For Saint Anselm, Wilson finished the game with a single-game
school-record 209 kickoff return yards, including returns of 92 and
70 yards, respectively. He finished the game with 274 all-purpose
yards, also a Saint Anselm single-game school record. Pierce was
20-of-37 for 217 yards and one touchdown, while Bouie had seven
catches for 87 yards and a score. Dan Bohenek (Bridgewater,
Mass.) and freshman Ethan Sylvain (East
Montpelier, Vt.) each had 10 tackles on defense, including
two for a loss by Bohenek.
Woodard led the Greyhounds with 163 yards on 22 rushes and four
touchdowns and became the Assumption all-time leading rusher early
in the first quarter. In two games at Saint Anselm, Woodard now has
340 yards and nine touchdowns during his career.
Saint Anselm falls to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the league, while
Assumption improves to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10. The
Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 24th as the team
travels to Stonehill for a 1 p.m. start at W.B. Mason Stadium.
