MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's
soccer team hosted cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire this
afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference game. After 95 minutes
of play, the first and only goal of the game was finally netted,
giving the Hawks a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory. The win
lifts the Hawks to 7-6-1 (6-5 NE-10), while the Penmen fall to
3-10-3 (1-8-3 NE-10).
While no goal was scored in regulation, there were a total of 31
shots taken in the first 90 minutes of the game. The Penmen
had two close chances to score in regulation, but both were saved
by Hawks goalkeeper Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree,
Mass.). At 35:34, Kristen Moore (Weymouth,
Mass.) took an open shot from within the six-yard box, but
Cooney made a nice save to keep the Penmen off the board. In
the second half, at 61:34, Ariel Teixeira (Warren,
R.I.) sent a corner kick to Andrea Wilson (North
Kingstown, R.I.) who shot the ball off her chest towards
the net, but Cooney made a nice diving save once again.
The Hawks had two late chances with under 20 minutes left in the
game. In the 72nd minute, senior Heidi Reece (Salem,
N.Y.) had a fast breakaway, but the drive was stopped by
Sara Martell (Milford, N.J.) at the top of the
box. Four minutes later, Reece sent a corner kick to senior
Ashley Lafond (Goffstown, N.H.) who headed the
ball towards the net, but Penman keeper Stef Young (Natick,
Mass.) just got her fingers on it on it to keep the ball
from going in.
After 90 minutes and no score, the game headed into
overtime. Then, at 95:15, freshman Jackie McEvoy
(Spring, Texas) set up to take a corner kick. McEvoy
sent a hard pass into the box right in front of the net where
sophomore Teresa Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.)
knocked the ball in to score her fourth goal of the season and give
the Hawks a 1-0 overtime victory. The Hawks outshot the
Penmen 19-14 in the game, and both goal keepers made 10 saves.
The game was the fourth consecutive 1-0 loss for the Penmen and
the 10th game in a row that has been decided by one goal or less.
In fact, out of the team's 16 games, only two have had a scoring
margin larger than one, and oddly enough, the two were back-to-back
5-0 games in early September, one in favor of the Penmen, the other
a loss. This was the eighth overtime game for the Penmen, and
just the third for the Hawks, who have not gone past 90 minutes
since the first two games of the season back in August.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 17th, when they
head down to Connecticut to take on the University of New Haven
Chargers for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up beginning at 1:00
pm.
