Manchester, N.H. (January 4)-In day two of the
2009 Saint Anselm Tournament, senior tri-captain Kathleen
Twomey (Londonderry, N.H.) netted the game-winner to
freeze the Polar Bears of Bowdoin 3-1. In the tourney finale,
Manhattanville topped the Ephs of Williams 3-1 to move to 9-1-0 on
the year.
In the afternoon game, the Hawks hit the scoreboard first as
Maria Dougherty
(Middletown,
R.I.) took a pass from
Kelsey Johnson
(Byfield,
Mass.) and Liz Burg
(Minneapolis, Minn.) to put Saint Anselm up 1-0 just over
a minute in the second period. Over five minutes later, Twomey's
game-winner was assisted by freshman Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach,
Calif.) and senior Bianca
DeSantis (Georgetown,
Mass.).
Bowdoin struck back when senior forward Scooter Walsh
(Urbana,
Ill.) redirected a shot from
teammate Jill Campbell
(Dartmouth, Nova
Scotia). Junior defenseman Shana
Natelson (Taos,
New Mexico) was also awarded an
assist on the goal.
In the third period the Hawks put the game out of reach on a
goal by Burg assisted by Johnson and defenseman Jamie
Comrie (Ashburn, Virg.).
Hawk goalie Amy Zappen (Huntington
Beach,
Calif.) finished the game with 23
saves in the victory, while Polar Bear netminder Sage
Santangelo (Laporte,
Colo.) had 38 saves in the losing
effort.
In the second game, Williams jumped out to the lead as
Samantha Tarnasky
(Caroline,
Ala.) beat Valiant goalie
Karine Turmel
(Ste-Marguerite,
Quebec) to make it 1-0 Ephs.
After that it was all Manhattanville, as Alex Findlay
(Collingwood,
Ontario) and Shannon
Coffey (Malden,
Mass.) each scored only 18
seconds apart to make it 2-1 Valiants in the second period.
Manhattanville added a late empty-net goal by Sarah
Fullerton (Port Tobacco,
Maryland) to make it a 3-1
victory for the Valiants.
Turmel made 17 saves in the victory, while Ephs goalie
Sara Plunkett
(Barrington,
R.I.) made 32 saves in the losing
effort.
