Manchester, N.H. (January 16)-The Saint Anselm
women's ice hockey team skated to a 5-1 ECAC East victory over the
Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College on Friday afternoon at
Sullivan Arena. The win moves the Hawks to 9-3-1 overall and 7-3-0
in ECAC East play, while the loss drops Saint Michael's to 3-11-0
overall and 1-9-0 in ECAC East action.
The Hawks hit the scoreboard first as freshman forward
Cierra Romaldo (Chuluota, Fl.) took a pass from
freshman Aly Zappen (Huntington
Beach,
Calif.) and sophomore
Alexa Hingston
(Charlestown,
Mass.) to make it 1-0 Saint
Anselm just over four minutes into the game. Saint Michael's
College evened the game with a goal from Desiree Biron
(Bow, N.H.) at the 12:32 mark.
In the second period, senior tri-captain Kathleen Twomey
(Londonderry,
N.H.) gave the Hawks the lead
with an unassisted shorthanded goal to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
With less than a second left in the period, senior defenseman
Maggie Dwyer
(Elkridge,
Md.) took a shot from just inside
the blue line that ricocheted off a Saint Michael's player and beat
Purple Knight goaltender Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake,
N.Y.) to make it 3-1 Hawks going into the third period.
Four minutes into the third stanza freshman forward
Bridget Sylvester
(Randolph,
N.J.) extended the Hawks lead off
helpers from Zappen and senior Bianca DeSantis
(Georgetown,
Mass.). Freshman forward
Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) added another
goal for the 5-1 final.
Three Hawks had multiple point games. DeSantis and Zappen had
two assist, while Dwyer finished the game with a goal and an
assist.
Freshman goalie Amy Zappen (Huntington
Beach,
Calif.) made 19 saves in the
victory, while Goldman finished with 32 saves in the losing effort.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, January 17th, as they will
host the Engineers of M.I.T. at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
