Manchester, N.H. (January 31)-The Saint Anselm
College women's ice hockey team, led by freshman Liz Burg's
(Minneapolis, Minn.) two goal effort, handed the Crusaders
of Holy Cross their first loss of the season in a 2-1 ECAC East
victory on Saturday evening at Sullivan Arena. The win improves the
Hawks to 13-5-0 while the loss drops the Crusaders to 17-1-1.
The first period was held scoreless by Hawk netminder
Carley Berry
(Danvers,
Mass.) and Crusader goalie
Carly Dominick-Sobol
(Syracuse,
N.Y.). Berry set aside eight
shots, while Dominick-Sobol made nine saves.
The second period was all Hawks as Burg took a pass from
classmates Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisc.) and
Molly Corl
(Danvers,
Mass.) to put Saint Anselm up
1-0. Five minutes later, Burg would light the lamp again at the
9:52 mark, this time unassisted, to extend the Hawks lead to 2-0.
The final stanza was dominated by the crusaders as they would
out-shoot the Hawks 17-6 in the period. Holy Cross finally hit the
scoreboard at the 16:39 mark on a goal by Christina
D'Ambrogio (Toronto,
Ontario) to cut the lead in half.
The Hawks would hold off on the last Crusader attempts and skate
onto the 2-1 victory.
Berry made 33 saves in between the pipes for the Hawks, while
Dominick-Sobol set aside 24 shots in the losing effort.
