Manchester, N.H. (January 31) -- Despite a
game-high 24-point effort from senior Justine Lyons
(Reading, Mass.), Saint Anselm dropped a 59-49 final to
Assumption on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.
Trailing 13-9 with 12:30 left in the opening period, Lyons got
things started for the Hawks with a three-pointer and the hosts put
together an 11-4 run to take a 22-17 advantage. The Greyhounds
battled back though and after a layup from Bethany
Plasski, the visitors took a 25-24 lead into the break.
The Greyhounds pushed the lead to double digits midway through
the period thanks to a 17-8 scoring run. Saint Anselm cut the lead
down to four on two occasions though, including with 2:30 left
after a pair of free throws by junior Carleen Orawsky
(Worcester, Mass.). Assumption knocked down 7-of-8 at the
free throw line in the final minutes though to come away with the
victory and sweep the regular-season series from Saint Anselm.
Lyons led the Hawks with 24 points, along with a 10-point,
10-rebound double-double by Courtney May (Lakeville,
Mass.). Molly Griffiths led three
Greyhounds in double figures with a 19-point, 12-rebound
double-double.
With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 4-16 overall and 2-13 in
the Northeast-10, while Assumption improves to 12-9 overall and
10-6 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Wednesday
night as the Hawks host Southern Connecticut for a 5:30 p.m. start.
