Freshman Shine in 7-2 Win over Nichols

Harrisville, R.I. (January 30)-The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team defeated the Bison of Nichols College 7-2 Friday night in ECAC East action. The win improves the Hawks to 12-5-1 on the campaign, while the loss drops the Bison to 1-15-1 on the season.

Nichols College struck first as Candice Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.) beat Hawk goaltender Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.) to put the Bison up 1-0. Hawk freshman forward Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) would answer with an unassisted goal of her own three and a half minutes later to even the game at one. Senior tri-captain Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.) would give the Hawks the lead off a pass from Cierra Romaldo (Chuluota, Florida) to make it 2-1 Saint Anselm going into the second period.

In the second period the Hawks tallied three goals all scored by freshman. Bridget Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.), Romaldo and Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) would each light the lamp to give Saint Anselm a 5-1 lead going into the third period.

Almost seven minutes into the period Aly Zappen would add another goal from Romaldo and Johnson to extend the Hawk lead to 6-1. Freshman forward Michelle Lacombe (Delafield, Wisconsin) pile on to the Hawk lead with her sixth lamplighter of the season. Bison forward Cheryl Winter (Cupertino, Calif.) would net her first goal of the season with just over four minutes left in the game, but it would not be enough as Saint Anselm skated on to a 7-2 victory.

11 of the 16 Hawk points came from the freshman class. Romaldo finished the night with a goal and two assists, while Zappen lit the lamp twice in the victory. Liz Burg (Ashburn, Virg.) had two helpers on the night and Marissa Serafino (Rutland, Vermont) was credited with her first career point with an assist on the goal by Sylvester.

The Hawks hit the ice again tomorrow with a home game versus ECAC East rival Holy Cross at 6 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
