Castleton,
Vt. (January 24)-The Saint Anselm
College women's ice hockey team, led by Samantha Rowe's
(Chelmsford, Mass.) second period shorthanded game-winning
goal, defeated the Spartans of Castleton State College 4-2 in ECAC
East action. The win improves the Hawks to 11-4-1 overall and 9-4-0
in league play, while the loss drops the Spartans to 3-14-0 on the
campaign.
The Hawks got the party started with a goal four and a half
minutes into the first period on a goal by senior forward
Bianca DeSantis
(Georgetown,
Mass.) off a pass from junior
defender Daniella Lyons
(Greene,
Maine) to make it 1-0 Saint
Anselm. Later in the period, Maria Dougherty
(Middletown,
R.I.) made it 2-0 off a pass from
freshman forward Molly Corl
(Danvers,
Mass.).
The Spartans drew first blood in the second period off a goal
from Adrianna Riggio
(Buffalo,
N.Y.) to the Hawks lead to 2-1.
Midway through the second period, Rowe's eventual game-winner gave
the Hawks a 3-1 lead off helpers from Dougherty and Chelsea
Fillingim (Fairbanks,
Alaska). Just over two minutes
later Castleton State cut into the lead again off a goal from
Amy Costa
(Bristol,
R.I.) to make it 3-2 going into
the third period.
The third period belonged to the Hawks as they out shot the
Spartans 8-3 and tacked on an empty-net goal by freshman forward
Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, California) for the
4-2 final.
Hawk goaltender Carley Berry
(Danvers,
Mass.) set aside 18 shots in the
win, while Amanda Hoy (Brockport, NY.) made 20
saves while giving up three goals in the losing effort.
The Hawks return to the ice Wednesday, January 28th, as they
will travel to Plattsburgh State for a 7 p.m. start.
