Springfield, Mass. (January 23) -- Saint Anselm
fell to American International on Friday night by an 86-83 final in
overtime in Northeast-10 men's men's basketball action.
AIC jumped out to a quick 14-13 lead with 13:35 on the clock
before the Hawks surged ahead midway through the first period.
The visitors led by as many as nine at 29-20 with 8:25 left in
the half, capped by a two-point jumper from Jack
Keough (Owego, N.Y.). The Yellow Jackets then pulled away
with a 20-3 run to take a 40-32 advantage with 1:45 left on seemed
poised to take a lead into the halftime break. That before a pair
of threes, along with a pair of free throws by Greg Vetrano
(Andover, Mass.) sent the game into the half tied at 40-40
as Saint Anselm closed the period on a quick 8-0 run.
In the second half, the two teams swapped leads eight times and
the Hawks led by a 66-61 margin with 4:28 lead after a
three-pointer from Thomas Baudinet (Watertown,
Conn.). In overtime, a Baudinet three-pointer went astray
in the final seconds as the Yellow Jackets hung on for the win.
Baudinet tied a career high with 27 points, as five Hawks were
in double figures. Keough was among the Hawks in double figures
with a career-high 15 points.
Saint Anselm falls to 10-7 overall and 6-7 in league play, while
AIC is now 12-7 overall and 8-6 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks are
back in action on Sunday afternoon as the team takes on the
University of Bridgeport for a 3:30 p.m. start at Stoutenburgh Gym.
