Manchester, N.H. (September 6) - In a game that
featured 11 goals, the Saint Anselm women's field hockey team, led
by two-goal efforts from Laura Urko (Attleboro,
Mass) and Annie Heaney (East Kingston,
N.H.), defeated Southern Connecticut State University
by a final score of 6-5 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The win
makes the Hawks 2-1 overall and in conference play, while the loss
puts the Owls at 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference games.
In the first half, the Hawks struck first when Heaney took a
pass from Maddie Cantarow (Norwood, Mass.) and
buried it past Owl goaltender Lauren Zarrella (Morris,
Conn.). Six minutes later, the Hawks tallied another as
Urko took a crossing pass from Karrie Muma (N. Falmouth,
Mass.) and fired it past the keeper to give Saint
Anselm a 2-0 lead.
The Owls fought back less than a minute later as Sara
Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) struck the ball past Hawk
goalie Riley Haddock (Falmouth, ME) to cut the
lead in half. Then the Owls knotted the game at 2-2 when
KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) tipped it past
Haddock with just over eight minutes to go in the first half.
The scoring was not done though as Saint Anselm scored with
just over five minutes to go in the half when Sara Sterling
(Mansfield, Mass.) took a pass from Ellen O'Neil
(Willington, Conn.) and buried it to give the Hawks a 3-2
lead at the break.
Southern Connecticut scored first in the second half when
Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn.) redirected a shot
by McCafferty to even the game at 3-3.
Off a corner, Saint Anselm took the lead back when
Maggie Dwyer (Elkridge, MD) rocketed a shot just
inside the circle past the goalkeeper to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.
Three minutes later, Sara Bassett (Stoneham,
Mass.) passed it to Heaney to score her second goal of the
game and give the Hawks a 5-3 advantage.
Just over a minute later, the Owls answered when Whitney
Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) cut the lead in half with an
unassisted goal to make it 5-4.
With just over eight minutes left in the game, Urko notched her
second goal of the game with a reverse flick shot to put the Hawks
up for good 6-4.
Winterbottom added another goal with just over four minutes left
to make it a one-goal game again, but it was not enough as the
Hawks went on to a 6-5 thrilling conference victory.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, September 10th, as they
will take on conference rival Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m. Southern
Connecticut returns to action Wednesday, September 10th, as they
will take on conference foe Stonehill College at 7 p.m. in New
Haven, Conn.
