Kutztown, Pa. (August
28) -- In the 2008 season opener, the Saint Anselm
football team dropped a 35-0 final to Kutztown University under the
lights at University Field in Kutztown, Pa. The game marked the
first for Saint Anselm first-year head coach Patrick
Murphy.
The Golden Bears got on the board with 11:12 left in the second
quarter when junior Shane Martin (New Holland,
Pa.) found classmate Kaleb Klosky (Fisher,
Pa.) deep in the corner of the end zone to put the hosts
up 7-0. With 4:21 left in the first half, Martin found the end zone
again as he took the ball on the quarterback keeper and scampered
in from 17 yards out for a 14-0 advantage. The score was set up by
a 16-yard pass to Mike Dietrich (York, Pa.) on
fourth-and-10 to get the Golden Bears to the Saint Anselm 17-yard
line.
Kutztown extended the lead to 21-0 with 8:38 left in the third
quarter when Dontay Wilson (Stamford, Conn.) took
the handoff from Martin straight up the middle for a 27-yard TD.
With 9:56 left in the fourth, Joe Strauss (Lititz,
Pa.) barreled in from three yards out for the 28-0 lead in
favor of the Golden Bears. The score was set up by a long run down
the sideline by Wilson that gave Kutztown a first and goal from the
five yard line. Wilson found the end zone himself with 6:04 left in
the game as he broke free for a 45-yard TD score to give Kutztown a
35-0 lead.
Wilson led the Hawk offense with 86 rushing yards on 24 rushing
attempts for the freshman quarterback. Defensively for the Hawks,
junior linebacker Dan Bohenek (Bridgewater, Mass.)
led the team with 12 tackles and he was joined in double figures by
Mark Colantonio (Londonderry, N.H.) with 10
For Kutztown, Martin completed 20-of-23 passes for one touchdown
and added a rushing score as well. Wilson was impressive on the
ground with 162 yards on 12 carries with a pair of touchdowns.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-1 overall, while Kutztown now
sits at 1-0 on the season. Saint Anselm is back in action on
Saturday, September 6th as the Hawks travel to New Hampshire rival
Plymouth State for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Plymouth, N.H.
